The Upper Room Devotional for 4th February 2025 Today’s Message
Topic: Hold my Hand
Jeanne A. Everhart (Minnesota, USA)
Today’s Reading
Psalm 121:1-8
Thought for the Day
“My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me” (Ps. 63:8, NRSVUE).
The psalmist wrote, “In my distress I cried unto the Lord, and he heard me.” – Psalm 120:1 (KJV)
I was about to undergo a biopsy of the lump in my breast. After the nurse prepared me for the procedure, she left to get the doctor. Alone in the room, on the exam table, I whispered a short prayer: “Jesus, hold my hand.” Moments later, the door opened and two nurses came in, followed by the doctor. The first nurse said, “Hello, my name is ‘Hand Holder’ because that is my job.” Her warm hand held mine as the biopsy was done.
Through the biopsy and the following cancer diagnosis and surgery, I put my trust in God, clinging tightly to the hand of Jesus. I cast all my cares on God because God cares for me (see 1 Pet. 5:7). Jesus tells us not to worry. Our heavenly Father will take care of us. Jesus asks, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” (Matt. 6:27, NIV).
Jesus indeed held my hand during this difficult time in my life and gave me peace, assurance, and hope. Isaiah 26:3 tells us that when we trust in and keep our thoughts on God, we can experience perfect peace. Now I am a five-year cancer survivor, filled with peace, hope, and joy.
