Open Heaven 3 January 2019 Devotional – Read: Matthew 13:1-9 (KJV)

1 The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the seaside.
2 And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.
3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;
4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the wayside, and the fowls came and devoured them up:
5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up because they had no deepness of earth:

6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.
7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:
8 But other fell into good ground and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.
9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

If you have heard or read Parable of the Sower as told by our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, you must have learnt some things from it.

Open Heaven 3 January 2019 Lessons from the sower I
However, if the Lord tarries, the Holy Spirit will be teaching us some more lessons from this parable over the next few days. The first of those lessons is that the sower was not prudent enough in the business of sowing. He sowed carelessly and in so doing, wasted a lot of good seed on inappropriate ground. This situation applies to the lives of many people who wasted their energy and resources on unprofitable ventures because, places and people to invest in. it is unimaginable business, places and people to invest in. it is unimaginable but true that some people sentimentally site their bakery business in their village of less than a hundred inhabitants.

Among such inhabitants, hardly would twenty people buy a loaf of bread in three days because not only are they used to their local foods, they are also not rich enough to afford a loaf of bread. The story was told of a poor fellow who was the first to show up and the last to leave; he was indeed very hardworking and dedicated. One day, the king decided to help him out of his poverty. He disguised a huge sum of money in a big loaf of bread and gave it to him. “Take this bread home and let me see how it will transform your life for the better,” said the king. Incidentally, the value of the bread was enough to pay for food that the poor man could eat for five days. To the disappointment of the king, the poor man sold the loaf of bread, not knowing what was in if, and that was how he lost the fortune of a lifetime.

Some ventures are like sowing among thorns or on stony ground. Initially, such ventures may appear as though they have prospects, only for diminishing returns to set in later. It is one thing to be hardworking and another thing to work wisely. It is one thing to keep busy and another thing to be busy doing something profitable. Even as a minister of the gospel, you need God’s wisdom in the business of Church planting. It is counterproductive to build a three thousand-seater capacity auditorium in a community of 500 people.

It is true that the souls of men are more valuable than money and that those souls of men are more valuable than money and that those souls in the village are not inferior to the souls in the city, but wisdom dictates that a congregation cannot grow beyond the number of people living in the community where it is located. This is the reason why the Holy Spirit inspired the words of today’s memory verse. Wisdom enables the soul-winner to engage in profitable methods of evangelism and church-planting. Praying for a miracle of any kind for an unrepentant sinner, apart from the miracle of salvation, may be equivalent to sowing by the roadside. I pray that the wisdom you need to experience breakthroughs in all dimensions of life will be given to you in Jesus’ Name.

Prayer Point (Open Heaven 3 January 2019 Devotional)

Father, I ask for wisdom that is rooted in Your word for all aspects of my life in Jesus’ Name.

TOPIC: From Prison To The Throne

MEMORISE:
“He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory; for the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S, and he hath set the world upon them.” – (1 Samuel 2:8).

READ: Genesis 41:39-46 (KJV)
39. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art;

40. Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled; only in the throne will I be greater than thou.

41. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.

42. And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph’s hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck;

43. And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee; and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt.

44. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.

45. And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphnathpaaneah; and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On. And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt.

46. And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.

MESSAGE: Open Heaven 27 May 2019

As observed by the preacher in Ecclesiastes 1:9 some life events are capable of repeating themselves in history. One of these is the rags-to-riches story described in today’s bible reading. Joseph had been sold into slavery in Egypt by his brothers, and as if that was not enough, he was also framed and cast into prison, where he reminded for some years until God’s favour rose over his destiny and took him to the throne as second-in-command of the largest empire on earth, even though he was a stranger there.

This familiar story has some hidden lessons we can learn. First of all, God will do whatever He has purposed in His heart to do, regardless of any obstacle on the way. Although Joseph was destined to be great, his brothers thought they could abort God’s plan for his life by selling him into slavery. They could never have imagine that they were actually sending him to the place where his dreams of greatness would be fulfilled.

Likewise, when Potiphar’s wife framed him, little did she know she was only acting as an instrument to bring about the fulfillment of God’s plan for him. In fact, Pharaoh’s butler could have been reinstated without him dreaming about it. God however made him dream about it so that Joseph could be known, and his gift of interpreting dreams could be used to save lives (Genesis 50:18?-20).

Beloved, are you passing through the furnace of envy and jealousy of those you consider to be your brethren? Joseph’s experience can be repeated in your life. All you need to do is keep your focus on where God is taking you to. Joseph was focused and that was why he achieved his purpose in life. Some people give up on their dreams in the face of adversity. This is not right, because Proverbs 24:10 says:
“If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength small.”
Are you in the prison of despondency and uncertainty? I prophesy into your life today that you will ascend from that prison to the throne of joy and glory in Jesus’ name. Those looking down on you shall begin to look up to you, and you will fulfill your destiny in Jesus’ name. For you to fulfill your destiny gloriously, you need to align yourself with the Author of your destiny: Jesus Christ is His name. that destiny which Satan, sin, and the wicked people of this world have battered shall be restored, and today shall be your day of coronation in Jesus’ Name. Congratulations!

PRAYER POINT:
Father, please take me to the place where Your purpose for my life will be fulfilled in Jesus’ Name.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:
Leviticus 8-9, Jeremiah 44:1-10

HYMNAL:
Hymn 1 – There shall be showers of blessing

1. There shall be showers of blessing;
This is the promise of love;
There shall be season refreshing,
Sent from the Saviour above.

CHORUS:
Showers of blessing,
Showers of blessing we need;
Mercy drops round us are falling,
But for the showers we plead.

2. There shall be showers of blessing;
Precious reviving again;
Over the hills and the valleys,
Sound of abundance of rain.

3. There shall be showers of blessing;
Send them upon us, Oh Lord!
Grant to us now a refreshing;
Come and now honour Thy Word.

4. There shall be showers of blessing;
O that today they might fall,
Now, as to God, we’re confessing,
Now as on Jesus we call!

5. There shall be showers of blessing;
If we but trust and obey;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
If we let God have His way.

Open Heaven 26 May 2019 Devotional – The Works of the Flesh written by Pastor E. A. Adeboye

DATE: Sunday, May 26, 2019

TOPIC: The Works Of The Flesh

MEMORISE: Open Heaven 26 May 2019
“Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.” – (Romans 6:12).

READ: Galatians 5:19-21 (KJV)
19. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20. Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21. Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

MESSAGE: Open Heaven 26 May 2019

The flesh is the Adamic nature that everyone is born with. This nature is subject to sin and is under its bondage. However, when a person becomes born again, he or she dies to this nature as it is nailed to the cross of Jesus, and so sin no longer has domination over such a person (Romans 6:6, Galatians 5:24). To live in this dominion, we must continually stand our ground in faith against the works of the flesh whenever suggestions to do them arise in our mind. Allowing the works of the flesh to manifest in your life after becoming born again implies choosing to be dominated by the flesh again (Romans 6:16).

The Holy Spirit lists some works of the flesh in today’s Bible reading, and He makes it clear that those who engage in them cannot inherit the kingdom of God. It’s true that after becoming born again, we are still susceptible to the works of the flesh because of the mortal body we live in (Romans 6:12).

However, when Jesus returns to transform us, this mortal body will be done away with and we will have a new body that is no longer susceptible to sin (1 Corinthians 15:35?-54). For this reason, the Holy Spirit admonishes us to subdue the needs and desire of our present body through self-denial and discipline so that the works of the flesh do not find expression through any of its parts. He says in Colossians 3:5:
“Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry.”

He also says in Romans 8:13:
“For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.”
Please, take note of the terms the Holy Spirit uses in these verses. As Christians, we are to mortify our bodies and not the flesh because our flesh, which is the old Adamic nature, is crucified already. The mortification of our body must be done consciously and deliberately. Sharing his personal experience on this, Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 9:27:
“But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castway.”

Beloved, no matter the spiritual height you have attained, you have to keep subduing your body through self-denial and discipline so that it does not mess you up. This is the reason why I always say that one cannot be too careful when it comes to the issue of sins. May the Lord help us to finish well and strong in Jesus’ Name.

ACTION POINT: Open Heaven 26 May 2019

Abstain from anything that triggers sinful desires in your body such as going to night clubs, unnecessary body contact with the opposite sex, pornography and ungodly jokes.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:
Leviticus 6-7, Jeremiah 43

HYMNAL:
Hymn 12 – Deeper, deeper in the love of Jesus

1. Deeper, deeper in the love of Jesus
Daily let me go;
Higher, higher in the school of wisdom,
More of grace to know.

CHORUS:
O deeper yet I pray,
And higher ev’ry day,
And wiser, blessed, Lord,
In Thy precious, holy word.

2. Deeper, deeper! blessed Holy Spirit,
Take me deeper still,
Till my life is wholly lost in Jesus
And His perfect will.

3. Deeper, deeper! tho’ it cost hard trials,
Deeper let me go!
Rooted in the holy love of Jesus,
Let me fruitful grow.

4. Deeper, higher ev’ry day in Jesus,
Till all conflict past,
Finds me conqu’ror, and in His own image
Perfected at last.

5. Deeper, deeper in the faith of Jesus,
Holy faith and true;
In His pow’r and soul exulting wisdom
Let me peace pursue.

Open Heaven 25 May 2019 Devotional – A Serving Leader written by Pastor E. A. Adeboye

DATE: Saturday, May 25, 2019

TOPIC: A Serving Leader

MEMORISE: Open Heaven 25 May 2019
“If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.” – John 13:14

READ: John 13:12-17 (KJV)
12. So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?

13. Ye call me Master and Lord; and ye say well; for so I am.

14. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.

15. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

16. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.

17. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

Open Heaven 25 May 2019 Devotional – MESSAGE:

Some people don’t know the difference between being a serving-leader and servant-leader. A great example of a serving leader is our Lord Jesus Christ. He served till the end of His earthly ministry and continues to serve even at the right hand of power in heaven (Romans 8:34, Hebrews 7:25). However, He is not a servant; He actually acknowledgement His status as Lord and Master in John 13:13. It is unfortunate therefore that many followers want to make servants out of their God-ordained leaders. Leaders are meant to serve but not to be subjected to servitude!

This is what I personally describe as the “abuse of a leader”. Some people use their leaders to their own selfish advantage, and when such leader dies, they jump over to another leader who they will also use to death! King Saul is a good example of a servant-leader. When he was confronted with his disobedience to God, he said in Samuel 15:24:
“I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.”
The people he was supposed to guide were actually the ones controlling him, and by his own admission, he feared them.

When a serving-leader becomes a servant-leader, people begin to wonder, “Who is leading who” God is not the author of confusion; this is why He always appoints a leader who He relates with and through whom He passes instructions to His people. Our Lords Jesus Christ makes it clear that there is a difference between a servant and a friend (John 15:15). A servant is limited, whereas a friend has a deeper relationship.

This distinction is the reason why leaders appointed by God cannot be servants. Followers should be sincere enough not to try to make servants of their God-ordained leaders. Such leadership will not do them any good, and they may not be spared when these servant-leaders, whom they have badly influenced, receive their judgment from God. Some mischief makers who like to manipulate their leaders to do their bidding would always advocate for servant-leadership, because they don’t really want leaders; they would rather have a stooge who they can use for their own interest. Open Heaven 25 May 2019

This arrangement is common in the political sphere, and cannot serve the interest of the people. If you are in such situation, remember you will give account of your service to God and not to a godfather. May God grant us leaders who will serve His interest in our churches and nations in Jesus’ Name.

PRAYER POINT:
Father, make me a serving-leader and not a servant of individual interests. Also, give us serving-leaders and not servant-leaders who would lead us astray through the fear of men.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:
Leviticus 4-5, Jeremiah 42:7-22

HYMNAL:
Hymn 5 – Let others see Jesus in you

1. While passing thro’ this world of sin,
And others your life shall view,
Be clean and pure without, within;
Let others see Jesus in you.

2. Your life’s a book before their eyes,
They’re reading it thro’ and thro’
Say, does it point them to the skies,
Do others see Jesus in you?

3. Then live for Christ both day and night,
Be faithful, be brave and true,
And lead the lost to life and light;
Let others see Jesus in you.
