TODAY’S TOPIC: ENSLAVING CONSUMERISM

SCRIPTURE: I, the LORD, am your God
who led you forth from the land of Egypt.
Psalm 81:11

MESSAGE: Catholic Daily Devotional Today 11th February 2022

The enslavement of the Israelites in Egypt provides a strong metaphor for my own spiritual journey. It doesn’t take long for me to recognize something that traps me into ways that limit growth in my relationship with God. One of these “enslavements” is the seduction of consumerism. I have vowed to live simply, yet I can quickly get enticed by my culture to have more than I need.

I hear others talking about how much money they’ve saved on a purchase, or I notice an ad that lures me into thinking I need an item that I do not—or I should buy something newer or better than I now have. When I release myself from this sly entrapment, I save my money and contribute it wisely for the benefit of others’ well-being. I can avoid the enslavement of consumerism if I recognize how countless people have so few material possessions while I already have more than enough. – Sr. Joyce Rupp
