TODAY’S TOPIC: ‘If…’

SCRIPTURE: “…if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” Jesus said to him, “‘If you can!’ Everything is possible to one who has faith.” – Mark 9:22-23

MESSAGE: Catholic Daily Devotional Today 21 February 2022

“If” in today’s Gospel betrays a father’s doubt as he begs physical healing for his son. Despite Jesus’ seeming impatience, he effectively strikes the word if and shows great compassion and boundless power to heal where even a smidgeon of faith is present.

Like the boy’s father, we may sometimes approach our Lord with that if you can mentality, letting doubt creep in or questioning whether help is even possible for our own helpless situations. Yet this reading calls us to remove those “if” moments—to boldly approach the throne of grace with confidence and receive mercy and help in our time of need (Hebrews 4:16).

Look again at the first line of today’s verse—but this time find and remove the word if. “You CAN do anything…” Now that’s the kind of faith Jesus is talking about!

Lord, I do believe, help my unbelief! Let me pray with confidence and proclaim your limitless possibilities. – Kathleen Swartz McQuaig
