SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE 12 MAY 2022 DEVOTIONAL

Topic: A ‘helping hand’ for God

Opening Prayer: May the meditation of my heart be acceptable unto you, O Lord as I read from your word.

Scripture: Genesis 16:1‐16

Question(s) for Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Notice the steps Sarai took to compromise her own home, her community and the future of her God‐promised descendants (vs.2,3). Having a child by one’s maid was practised in Abram’s time. But for him, that would contradict God’s promise (Genesis 15:4). Are there such practices in your community that contradict God’s word?

Abram’s family conflict is a common experience of those who act like him today, following their customs and cultural practices (vs.4–6). If you are despised, marginalised, or oppressed, seek solace in God who knows and is concerned about our plight (vs.7–11). Be careful where you go for help in times of distress (v.7; cf. Ruth 1:14–17).

Note the instruction given to Hagar in v.9. Many have linked vs.10–12 to the root cause of present‐day international terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism. Read vs.13‐14 and note the change that the encounter with the angel brought to Hagar. In the light of that, what should be our attitude and approach to those who live and act like descendants of Ishmael?

Practice/Word Application
Fact: The son born to Abram and Hagar, was not part of God’s plan to create a new nation which will bring blessing to the nations of the world.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Help me, Lord, to hold on firmly to your promise, knowing you are faithful.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
Romans 8:28; 1Samuel 17, 18, Psalms 51, Matthew 8
