MESSAGE | Daily Guide 16 April 2022 | Scripture Union Devotional
The death of Jesus Christ on the cross was remarkable by what happened between 12noon and 3pm that Good Friday (see these in vs.44‐48). What is the significance of the tearing of the veil of the Temple, which separates the holy place from the Holy of Holies (v.45b)? The death of the Son of God has bridged the gulf between the sinful men and the Holy God. Access has been granted to all mankind through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ.
God could now be approached by anybody through Jesus Christ, the only perfect and worthy priest. What lessons can we learn from the actions and inactions of those left behind as Jesus died ‐ The Centurion (v.47), the crowd (v.48) and the acquaintances (v.49)? Joseph of Arimathea was a friend in life and in death. Although a highly placed and respected member of the council, he did not consent to what the others did in plotting against, and getting rid of, Jesus.
Jesus’ body was the property of the government because He died by public execution as a “criminal”. Joseph used his influence to give Jesus a befitting burial. He thus declared his stand publicly and provided the surest evidence for Christ’s resurrection.
