Is it possible to truly forgive someone who offends you without any iota of a desire to seek revenge? Joseph’s brothers feared that their brother Joseph might seek some vengeance against them especially after the death of their father. Perhaps he was only holding on out of respect for their father. So, in today’s reading, Joseph’s brothers come pleading with him for leniency. If you were Joseph, how would you have reacted?

Jesus has taught us that we should forgive endlessly without any limitation (read Matthew 18.21‐22). Joseph displayed this kind of forgiveness. Joseph’s reply to his brothers is a profound statement: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish . . . the saving of many lives” (v. 20). Indeed “in all things, God works for the good of those who love him” (Romans 8.28). Can we too forgive like Joseph did?

Yes, we can, under the enabling of God’s Holy Spirit who dwells in us and fills us with that true love which comes from our Father above. We all need this grace to forgive unconditionally and forever because failure to forgive cuts us off from receiving forgiveness from God.
