TODAY’S TOPIC: GOD OF JUDGMENT AND RESTORATION

Opening Prayer: As I read through this passage dear Lord, let your word bring transformation to my life.

SCRIPTURE: AMOS 9:1-15

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 31 January 2024

The Children of Israel sinned against God and God’s judgment on them was revealed to Amos in a vision. Judgment will begin at the altar; the centre of the nation’s life, the place where people expected protection and blessing. The judgment will cover all twelve tribes in Israel. God would destroy their base of security to bring them to Himself (vs.1-6).

No one can escape God’s judgment. Does God’s judgment sound good news or bad news to you? God’s judgment will be the same for Israel as for other nations (v.7). He is not the God of Israel only. He is the God of the universe, and He controls all nations. He will judge your actions.

Amos, however, assured Israel that God would “never completely destroy” them. That means their punishment will not be permanent or total (vs.8-9). God wants to redeem, not destroy. If God disciplines you, accept it as a sign of His love (Hebrews 12:8-11).

Observe from vs.11-12 that this God who punishes sin is also the one who restores. Read vs.13-15 and note God’s promises to us as His children.

Practice/Word Application
And so: In the punishment, the house of David was reduced to a “fallen house” but God never reneged on His covenant with David (2 Samuel 7:12-16). He fulfilled it in Christ Jesus (Acts 15:16-17).
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Dear heavenly Father, may I, through your word, be inspired to live faithfully according to your desires.
