MFM DEVOTIONAL FOR JANUARY 2024

Beloved, whenever the call to give is made or an opportunity to give to God’s work, pay tithe, give firstfruits and offering or alms to the poor presents itself, you should seize it and utilise it maximally. The Bible says, “Give and it shall be given unto you a great measure pressed down shaken together shall men give back to your bosom” (Luke 6:38). We get more by giving and get less by hoarding.

Our Fire Scripture for today gives an interesting account of King Hezekiah of Judah who understood the spiritual importance of giving and actually practised it (2 Chronicles 30:24). In 2 Chronicles 31:4, King Hezekiah commanded the people that dwelt in Jerusalem to give the portion of the priests and Levites, that they might be encouraged in the law of the LORD. The response of the people to the commandment to give was prompt and impressive. The Bible says that as soon as the commandment came abroad, the children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of corn, wine, and oil, and honey, and of all the increase of the field; and they brought the tithe of all things abundantly.

Similarly, those of Judah brought in the tithe of oxen and sheep, and the tithe of holy things which were consecrated unto the LORD their God, and laid them by heaps. What is important to note here about the response of the people to the commandment to give was their promptness and unusual generosity. They gave so much that they had a great heap of bounties. When King Hezekiah saw the heap of bounties and asked how they came about, Azariah the chief priest answered him, “Since the people began to bring the offerings into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to eat, and have left plenty: for the LORD hath blessed his people and that which is left is this great store or heap.

Dear reader, always remember that givers get more and will never lack while hoarders and the stingy lose. It is a divine principle. The Bible affirms that those who sow sparingly will reap sparingly and those who sow bountifully will reap bountifully (2 Corinthians 9:6). Henceforth, make your response to the commandment to give prompt, generous and sacrificial. You will get heaps of divine bounties in return.
