Daily Guide 7 May 2022 | Scripture Union Outline

Apostle Peter now turns to relationships with our neighbours, everyone in general and Christians in particular. Notice the commands in vs.8‐12. Note, in particular, the need for forgiveness and the proper use of our tongues. When we do these things, people around us may ask why we are so different. That will give us the opportunity to, “give the reason for the hope that we have” (v.15).

It should not surprise us however, if some hate us just because of our good behaviour. Christ suffered in the same way. We must not expect a better treatment from the world. How should we react to an outright wrong accusation against us (see vs.14, 16‐17)? What does vs.19‐20 mean? The Bible is clear that repentance is only possible on this side of the grave (Hebrews 9:27).

So, in line with this, the NIV Study Bible suggests we read v.19 thus: “And in that (resurrection) state, by means of (his) ascension, he made proclamation to the spirits in prison.” (See NIV or ESV Study Bible for fuller comments.) Baptism has meaning only when we have repented of our sins and put our faith in the risen Saviour. It is otherwise an ineffective bath. Read v.21 again.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

2 Thessalonians 3:16; 1Samuel 7, 8, 1Corinthians 16
