Daily Guide 9 May 2022 | Scripture Union Outline

Suffering is an essential part of the Christian faith. Neither Christ nor His apostles kept us in the dark regarding the trials and sufferings that will accompany us on our Christian pilgrimage. (See Matthew 5:11‐12; 1 Peter 1: 6‐7; 1 Thessalonians 3:4). Christ Himself suffered and we His followers should not expect to be free from suffering. Other believers, including Peter, suffered for their faith.

We should not expect to be different unless we refuse to acknowledge our faith before men. The end of Christian suffering is to bring glory to God. It never destroys us but purifies us and prepares us for the glory that awaits us in heaven (v.14, cf. Romans 5:3‐5). There is no crown without a cross. Notice however, that it is not every suffering that should be celebrated (v.15).

Practice/Word Application
A challenge: Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, was facing execution for his faith and was challenged to deny Christ and be released. His response, “Eighty‐six years I have served Him, and He never did me any wrong. How can I blaspheme my King who saved me?”

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Pray for grace to also stand firm for the Lord in the face of persecution.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
Habakkuk 3:19; 1Samuel 11, 12, Hebrews 1
