FIRE SCRIPTURE: Genesis 13:5–18.

PRAISE & WORSHIP

Your choices create your future. The choices you make today will determine your tomorrow. Adam and Eve, Cain, and Noah all made choices and lived with the consequences. Poor choices have negative consequences while wise choices have positive consequences. God has given us the freedom to make our choices, but it is important that we learn how to make the choices that will bless rather than mortgage our future.

Our Fire Scripture for today is a biblical account of how Lot exercised his freedom of choice. The incident looked very simple and insignificant, but its consequences were far-reaching and eternal. Lot’s relationship and closeness with Abraham had brought him into wealth like his uncle. The Abrahamic blessing positively affected his life. He too had flocks, herds and tents. He and Abraham had so much wealth that the land could not contain both of them anymore.

Soon there was strife between the herdsmen of Abraham’s cattle and the herdsmen of Lot’s cattle. Abraham told Lot, “Let there be no strife between you and me. The whole land is before you. Choose which part you want and separate from me. If you choose to go right, I will go left and vice versa.”

Lot chose the well-watered plain of Jordan before God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. That was the beginning of Lot’s spiritual downfall. The evil of the land of Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed him and wasted his testimony.

Here are some important lessons we need to learn about making choices. First, choices often result in eternally significant consequences; hence, we must choose in line with God’s principles. Lot was guided by his sight, not by God. His choice was therefore wrong. Consequently, he kept going down since he went to live in Sodom and Gomorrah, until he got completely shipwrecked and doomed.

Besides, you should make choices that value relationships over rights. Lot should have let his uncle, Abraham, God’s friend, guide him in the choice he made.

You should also make choices that value godliness over greed, fellowship with God over approval of the world, and eternal promises over immediate pleasure. Lot missed out on all these. He didn’t end well. Learn from Lot’s mistakes.
