BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 1 Kings 19-20, John 2:1-25
MESSAGE: Religion and godliness are two separate things. Religion is a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects. The Pharisees and Scribes in the days of Jesus are good examples of religious people because they couldn’t recognise Jesus as the Messiah they had been expecting, yet, they followed the laws of Moses to the letter.
The Pharisees refused to believe in the ministry of Jesus despite all the signs and wonders He performed. They also didn’t believe in the message of love and mercy, rather, they believed that no sinner must go unpunished (John 8:1-5). They paid attention to looking and acting holy rather than being holy.
On the other hand, godliness is holiness. A fellow is godly when he has the nature of God; he/she is Christ-like. While a godly person shows love, a religious person finds it easy to castigate others, whereas, he does worse in secret. A religious person is a pretender; he or she can quote scriptures, but does not live by the scriptures. If you find it difficult to show love to people, yet, you preach the gospel, you are practising religion, not godliness. Godliness will bring you great gain in this world and the world to come.
KEY POINT: Are you religious or godly?
HYMN: I’VE FOUND A FRIEND IN JESUS
