OUR DAILY BREAD DEVOTIONAL FOR TEENS 9 AUGUST 2021
TOPIC: OVERFLOWING
Bible Reading: Romans 15:4-13
Key Scripture: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him – Romans 15:13
“No! No! No! NO!” I shouted. It didn’t help. Not one bit. I hadn’t realised the toilet was blocked. Then I flushed. I knew something was wrong as soon as I pulled the lever. And then I had to watch helplessly as the water overflowed onto the bathroom floor.
How many times have we tried to pour a drink and spilled it everywhere? Or opened an exploding bottle of pop, forgetting that it’s been shaken about in our bag on the way home?
Spills are almost never a good thing. But there might be one example that’s different. Paul uses the image of overflowing to describe people so full of God’s Spirit that what keeps spilling out of them is hope—or confidence—in God (Rom. 15:13). I love that picture of being so filled up with joy, peace and love that it just has to come out! It’s like we can’t help but show confidence in our heavenly Father.
It might be that this sounds OK when things in our lives are going well. But even when we get ‘fizzed up’ like a shaken bottle of pop, hopefully what spills out of us is the love and peace of knowing Jesus. How can we ever hope to be so filled up with God? By sticking close to Him every day and spending time getting to know Him better!
