Today’s Insights
In the middle of Paul’s discussion with the Corinthian church about sharing the message of the gospel, he makes two references to creation. In verse 4 of today’s reading, Paul refers to Christ as the image of God—language that is similar to the description of the creation of humanity (Gen. 1:26). Then in verse 6, Paul refers to the creation of light (see Gen. 1:3) as similar to the effect of salvation. In both cases—the creation of light and our new redeemed life—God created something new (2 Cor. 5:17) and both are “very good” (Gen 1:31).

Today’s Devotional

Few would doubt the motivational force of Sir Winston Churchill’s words during the Second World War. He never gave in, even when victory seemed impossible. His stirring statements and strong attitude of will and heart were contagious. “Never give in,” he urged, “never, never, never, in nothing, great or small, give in . . . , except in honour and good sense.” Winston Churchill knew the importance of his cause, which is why he did not lose heart amidst the horrors of war.

Paul’s example was also one of perseverance, but for an even greater cause. Believing that the ministry he was engaged in was from God, he told the persecuted church in Corinth, “We do not lose heart” (2 Corinthians 4:1). He wasn’t about to give up, however hard things became, and in his letter he encouraged them, and us, to do the same. Never give in!

Yes, following Jesus will involve hardship (v. 8), but God promises never to abandon us (v. 9). Instead, He places into these perishable bodies of ours a “treasure”—the light of Christ (v. 6)—that will shine through life’s cracks “to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us” (v. 7). “For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord” (v. 5). Jesus is the ministry of God’s mercy. He is why we need never lose heart.
