Why did the king send a message to Jeremiah to pray for him (Jeremiah 37:3) but would not obey the message the Lord sent to them (Jeremiah 37:2). Compare their action with Saul’s behaviour in 1 Samuel 15:1-23. We find similar behaviours around us today. Powerful and rich people would seek prayers when in trouble, but they would not live by the standard of God as revealed in His word. King Zedekiah invites Jeremiah again and wanted to know the message from the Lord, but would he obey God’s instruction (Jeremiah 37:17)?
Notice Jeremiah’s bluntness. He told the king that the Chaldean army would return and burn down Jerusalem. The temporary relief the city had with the help of Pharaoh’s army would not last. Situations around may change, but God’s word does not change. What can we learn for Jeremiah in Jeremiah 37:11-17? He was falsely accused, harassed, beaten and imprisoned for speaking the truth but he remained truthful to God. For our message to be effective, we must be ready to confront corrupt leaders with the truth and be prepared to suffer for the sake of the truth (2 Timothy 2:12; 2 Timothy 3:12).
