Scripture Union Daily Guide 11 APRIL 2024 OUTLINE

The prophet paints in very graphic terms the folly of idol worship, idols carved from wood by the skill of a carver or a carpenter. Why should the same wood burnt as fuel to provide fire for cooking or for warming ourselves be also fashioned into a god to be worshipped? The prophet shows that the creation of gods from wood or whatever object is a great folly: “Shall I bow down to a block of wood?” (v.19). Why do you think some people believe certain crafted objects can be gods? The prophet attributes it all to a spirit of delusion (v.20).

In our modern world there are more subtle forms of idolatry. We need to beware of them, so we do not suffer the same delusion people suffered from worshipping physical idols. In the ten commandments, Yahweh instructed Israel to recognize no other God except Himself. God must always be given pre-eminence over everything in His creation. Our primary duty is to be obedient to Him. Whenever we allow other commitments to take precedence over obedience to God, we have turned those commitments into our gods. In modern days, very often, it is our over concentration on acquiring wealth or the pleasures of this world at the expense of the wellbeing of our fellow human beings.
