Scripture Union Daily Guide 13th May 2026 – Outline

This passage gives further details of the consequences of Judah’s unfaithfulness to God. The Babylonians plundered the temple and took away the sacred things (Jeremiah 52:17-23). There is danger in toying with our relationship with God. For Judah, it was the plundering of physical articles in the temple, but for us, the “sacred things” we would lose go beyond physical, it could also include spiritual blessings such as the joy of salvation, peace of mind, spiritual authority, intimacy with God, ministry opportunities, spiritual protections, and even heaven, etc. How do you feel reading Jeremiah 52:24-27?

It is instructive that the people of God and anointed priests were captured, taken to captivity and executed as though they did not know God. The exile of thousands of the people of Judah (Jeremiah 52:28-30) reflects God’s mercy amidst judgement. Nebuchadnezzar had the prerogative of executing everyone but because of God’s mercies, many were allowed to live.

God preserved a remnant, including people like Daniel and his friends. Eventually, God moved King Cyrus of Persia to allow the remnant to return home (Ezra 1:1-4) Jehoiachin’s release and elevation (Jeremiah 52:31-34) also show that God’s mercy triumphs over judgement.

What Next?
God’s discipline always aims at restoration. Could you be going through some form of God’s discipline right now? Let it lead to your restoration (James 1:2-4; 1 John 1:9).
