Scripture Union Daily Guide 14 January 2026 Outline

In today’s reading, the Lord forbade Prophet Jeremiah to marry or bear children in Judah. He had withdrawn His blessing, love and mercy from the land. Undignified death awaited its inhabitants, therefore, raising a family in such a place was hopeless (Jeremiah 16:1-4).

The people added their own sins to the wickedness of their ancestors, making God’s judgment inevitable (Jeremiah 16:10-13). But in Jeremiah 16:14-15, God, in His own mercy, promised to restore the Israelites to their own land from wherever He had scattered them. This is the characteristic of the Lord in His covenant dealings with His people. He is not willing to destroy them completely. His greater concern is that they would turn from their evil ways back to Him (see 2 Peter 3:9b).

In the meantime, judgment was inevitable. He would send “fishermen” (v.16a) and “hunters” (Jeremiah 16:16b) after them. There is no hiding place for the sinner.
We end today’s reading on a note of universal deliverance as the nations renounce their idols and turn to God. It is only when we turn to God and serve Him faithfully that He reveals His might and power to us in our daily walk with Him (Jeremiah 16:19-21).
