Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 15 October 2023
This psalm is associated with the incident in 1 Samuel 19:11-17. Saul had sent guards to capture and kill David but his wife, Michal let him escape overnight.
See the refrain that is echoed, ‘Each evening they came back….” David likens the blood thirsty people to a pack of wild dogs that prowl the street at night seeking some helpless victim they can attack and tear to pieces (vs.6-7).
David’s personal prayer to God was for him to destroy them in such a way that all will know it is a direct judgment from the righteous God. Whatever real or perceived enemy we may have, we should always remember that God is our refuge in times of trouble (v.16b). Those who are oppressed can trust in the justice of God and in His steadfast love (vs.10,17). It is however, not for us to seek the destruction of our enemies (Matthew 5:43-45).
