Scripture Union Daily Guide 18 January 2026 Outline

In today’s passage, God used another object to convey His message to the people. This perhaps was to make the message more clearer to them. Notice the specific instructions God gave to the prophet in Jeremiah 19:1-3. Why is it necessary to first deliver the message in Jeremiah 19:3 ff at the valley of the son of Hinnom and to the elders of both the people and priests? God does not execute judgment on individuals and nations without a cause.

What were God’s reasons for pronouncing judgment on Judah (Jeremiah 19:4-5)? Did you notice that the people sold themselves into idolatry? Idolatry whether ancient or modern is a direct affront to God (Exodus 20:3-5). The consequences are grave (Jeremiah 19:6-9, 2 Kings 6:24-29). Any involvement in idolatry requires repentance and turning to God.

In Jeremiah 19:10-11, Jeremiah broke the flask as instructed by God. This was a sign to the people that Judah will be shattered beyond all hope of repair. Though Jeremiah took the initiative of repeating God’s warning at the courts of the Temple, the people remained in their sins. It is true that God is patient with men. However, His patience should not be taken for granted.

Prayer of Faith
Isaiah 6:8

Pass me not, O gentle Savior
1. Pass me not, O gentle Savior,
Hear my humble cry;
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.

Refrain
Savior, Savior, Hear my humble cry;
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.

2. Let me at Thy throne of mercy
Find a sweet relief,
Kneeling there in deep contrition;
Help my unbelief.

3. Trusting only in Thy merit,
Would I seek Thy face;
Heal my wounded, broken spirit,
Save me by Thy grace.

4. Thou the Spring of all my comfort,
More than life to me,
Whom have I on earth beside Thee?
Whom in Heav’n but Thee?

Closing Prayer
Lord, help me to heed your warning and depart from idolatry.
