Scripture Union Daily Guide 18 October 2024: Test The Spirits!

Daily Guide Devotional For Today 18th October 2024 (Friday)

TOPIC: TEST THE SPIRITS!
OPENING PRAYER: Oh Lord, fill me with the power of the Holy Ghost as I study your word.
SCRIPTURE: 1 SAMUEL 19:1-24

Question(s) for Reflection
* Q8: Is there any other Biblical passage that can help me understand this passage better?
This chapter presents us with two difficult concepts.
(a) V.9: How can an evil spirit come “from the Lord”?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 18 October 2024 Outline

We find the answer in the first two chapters of the Book of Job. Twice, there was an Assembly of God’s angels in heaven and Satan too came. His desire was to destroy Job completely, but God set the boundary (Job 1:12; 2:6). What did Satan do next? He went from the Lord to Job to do his usual business: “to kill, to steal, and to destroy” (John 10:10).

(b) Vs.19-20, 23: How could Saul’s men prophesy when they were on an evil mission, and later Saul himself?
We find the answer in the words of Jesus Christ in Matthew 7:22-23. A person who does not belong to God can prophesy in His name! This is why it is not an exercise of the gifts of the Spirit we use to prove that someone is a man or woman of God. Instead, Jesus tells us: “you will know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16; Galatians 5:22-23). Obviously, the satanic spirit was still at work in Saul (v.24)!

For Further Study
For further study: In addition to 2 Corinthians 11:14, what other texts show us that Satan can counterfeit gifts of the Spirit?
