Today’s Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 20 December 2022

Tearing one’s clothes in ancient times, indicated dismay, sorrow and repentance (v.19). Observe how Josiah was convinced of the truthfulness of the Book of the Law. He was deeply convicted, recognizing that their sins had brought God’s wrath on them (v.21b). So, he responded in humble repentance (v.27). Having many Bibles or keeping an open Bible on the table will not do us any good if we do not allow God’s Word to rip our hearts.

Only when we read and meditate on God’s Word and obey it will great changes happen in our lives (compare James 1:22‐25). Observe Josiah’s good example as he sought to know how to respond to what they had just heard from God’s Word (v.21a). Huldah did not seek to please the king, unlike many preachers and prophets today who say what people want to hear rather than what the Lord is saying. She announced boldly God’s judgment upon the people who would reap the fruit of their unfaithfulness (vs.23‐25). The Lord however spared Josiah because of his humble and responsive heart (vs.26‐28).

For Further Study
Read and meditate on Luke 11:28 and 2 Timothy 4:2‐5.

Practice/Word Application
What next? Josiah led the whole nation to repent and commit themselves to God’s covenant (vs.29‐33). How do you personally respond to God’s Word?
