SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE DEVOTIONAL 20 OCTOBER 2022

Topic: Check Your Priority!

Opening Prayer: Oh Lord, grant me divine guidance as I read and meditate on your word in Jesus name.

Scripture: 2 Chronicles 8:1‐18

Question(s) for Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?

It took Solomon 20 years to build the temple and his palace (v.1). Which of the two took longer time to build (See 1 King 6:38; 7:1)? Does this tell us anything about Solomon’s priority? We need to realise that the way we spend our time and other resources shows our priorities in life. We cannot claim to love God so much while we are self‐centred; using God‐give resources to pursue personal ambitions, even in the name of doing ministry (See Matthew 6:19‐20).

Solomon obeyed God’s law in the way he treated his people (vs.7‐10; Leviticus 25:39) and he followed the guidelines prescribed by David, his father, as he organised the temple worship (vs.12‐16). In all these, he is worthy of emulation. Note also that it was only after he had properly organised the temple worship that he was considered to have accomplished all the work of the temple (v.16).

In as much as the church building is important in providing a place of worship for the people of God, it must be emphasised that God is more concerned with our act of worship that flows from a sincere heart. What do you think of Solomon’s action in v.11 (compare with 1 King 11:1‐8, Deuteronomy 7:3‐4 and 17:17)? Do we also behave like Solomon?

Practice/Word Application
What Next? Whenever you must choose between obeying God’s clear instruction and just doing something to satisfy your conscience, be courageous enough to obey God.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Lord, help me to always obey you not just when it is convenient for me, but even when it is not.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
Jeremiah 32:27; Nehemiah 12, 13; Job 42
