Scripture Union Daily Guide 22nd March 2026 – Outline

One would expect that Jesus should be excited with the large crowd following Him and should do whatever He can to retain them. But, instead of making discipleship sound easy, Jesus confronted them with the hard truth: following Him requires total commitment. Read Luke 14:26-27 again. Observe the strong language that Jesus used to address them. If you were Jesus, how would you have addressed the crowd? How do preachers address such a crowd of followers today?

Does Jesus really mean we should hate our families? (See Matthew 10:37 for further clarification). Jesus is not calling for hatred but for undivided devotion. He must come first, even above the closest of our relationships.
In Luke 14:28-32, Jesus told two short parables to illustrate that following Him requires counting the cost. To build a tower you must first calculate the cost, and to go to war against an adversary, you must consider if you can win. Following Jesus is not cheap; it will cost us some valuable things. Have you considered what it means to follow Him fully? Are there areas where you hold back?

Lord, whose love in humble service
1. Lord, whose love in humble service
bore the weight of human need,
who upon the cross, forsaken,
worked your mercy’s perfect deed,
we, your servants, bring the worship
not of voice alone, but heart,
consecrating to your purpose
every gift that you impart.

2 Still your children wander homeless;
still the hungry cry for bread;
still the captives long for freedom;
still in grief we mourn our dead.
As you, Lord, in deep compassion
healed the sick and freed the soul,
use the love your Spirit kindles
still to make your people whole.

3 As we worship, grant us vision
till your love’s revealing light
in its height and depth and greatness
dawns upon our quickened sight,
making known the needs and burdens
your compassion bids us bear,
stirring us to tireless striving,
your abundant life to share.

4 Called from worship into service,
forward in your name we go,
to the child, the youth, the aged,
love in living deeds to show.
Hope and health, goodwill and comfort,
counsel, aid, and peace we give,
that your children, Lord, in freedom
may your mercy know, and live.

Closing Prayer
Lord, help me to follow You with complete devotion, putting You above all else. Strengthen me to be a faithful disciple, ready to pay the price that following You may involve.

Prayer of Faith
