It is not hard to read between the lines and see true Christian love behind the words in this letter. Take
another look at vs.4 and s. He had warned them to expect persecution (cf. 2 Timothy 3:12). He knew that the Lord would sustain them through it if they trusted in Him.
However, he also knew that they were new believers, and he was not altogether sure of the strength or quality of their faith. This made him anxious like any mother would be if she knew thạt her infant child was being exposed to serious danger. That was why he had sent Timothy to visit them and bring back news of how they were faring (vs.6-8).
Timothy returned with three specific items of good news (r.6); and, predictably, Paul’s joy was unbounded. For him, this resulted in more prayer and praise to God and a stronger desire to see them in person (vs.9-10) and build them up the more.
Do you have such sons and daughters in the faith for whom you experience such tender affection? Pray that God will enable your Christian witness to bear such fruit.
