Scripture Union Daily Guide 26 September 2024 Outline:
How history repeats itself so soon among the people of God. Remember in chapter 3, we saw how Eli’s children misbehaved and God had to raise Samuel to take over. Now Samuel’s children too ‘have gone after dishonest gain….’ Why do leaders’ children sometimes go astray? Are leaders so busy they have no time for their families? Ministering at the home front must be leaders’ top priority and the church must ensure to support them and their families. God did not rebuke Samuel so, unlike Eli, he probably played his role as a father.
This time, the people protested but their motive was flawed. They only used Samuel’s wicked sons as an excuse, but they were only yielding to peer pressure, desiring to be like the other nations (vs.5,20). They forgot that they were different – they were God’s special, chosen nation. God and not Samuel or his children was their King (12:12) and He is the one who fights their battles (12:8-11).
“As you make your bed, so must you lie in it”. There are consequences for every decision we take. As directed by God, Samuel clearly stated the consequence of Israel’s intended change of direction (vs.10-18). This is a good model for godly parents who sometimes must deal with their adolescent rebels. Choosing to be different makes us an effective witness in the world, while compromise weakens our witness.
