Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 5: Is there any warning for me to heed?

Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 11 March 2023

Yesterday we reflected on a colt that the Lord needed. Today we see that the Lord had another need. He was hungry and saw in the distance, a fig tree with full leaves. Did the fig tree satisfy the need of the Lord Jesus? If so, how? And if not, why not? On their return journey, the disciples were surprised that the fruitless fig tree that Jesus cursed had withered. Let us reflect on what this means for us as follower of Jesus who are expected to bear fruit in our lives.

The Lord also had some expectations for what should be going on in the temple. Notice what He found there and His response (see vs.15-16). The Lord expects His house, our place of worship, to be a house of prayer for all nations (v.17). In what ways is money affecting places of worship today and reducing God’s house from being a house of prayer? How is the gospel being distorted in your context for material gains and injustice towards vulnerable people? Some people felt strongly about the words of Jesus that they started looking for ways to kill Him. Money matters are also serious matters in some churches, leading to broken relationships and much worse in some contexts.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
Lord, please help us not to be like the fruitless fig tree or the money merchants in your house of prayer.
