Scripture Union Daily Guide 26th May 2026 -Outline
David and his men were devastated by the death of Saul and his sons including the army of Israel (2 Samuel 1:11-12). For David, that the armies of the Philistines, the uncircumcised people, defeated the army of Israel was a terrible humiliation to Israel. Israel and her God were seen as weak and defeated by worshippers of idols. He composed a song which he ordered his people to sing in memory of Saul and Jonathan.
Saul was David’s enemy number one, but his death did not make him rejoice. He looked at the positive contribution Saul made to Israel (2 Samuel 1:23-24). Many people in many African countries refrain from saying bad things about someone at his funeral. They dwell solely on the positives.
As believers we need to learn from this and leave their punishment to God. 2 Samuel 1:26 has been interpreted in some negative ways leading to some gay people saying love of a woman here meant sexual love. But love of a woman generally meant the sacrificial love a woman shows to her children. Besides, homosexuality in Israel was punishable by death. Jonathan loved David to a point of accepting him as future king of Israel in his place (1 Samuel 23:17). Love at its best.
