Today’s Outline: Scripture Union Daily Guide 27th May 2020
This psalm can be divided into three equal sections, each of which focusses on the life of the righteous and its outcome. Read vv.1–3 again and note how trusting God is true might and true wealth. Happiness is not a reward that is earned but is the experience of being connected to God.
Those who fear God, who trust Him, whose lives are oriented to his purpose, become like Him. They are sources of light for others. Their character embodies God’s character, including gracious provision for others. Fearing God means entrusting one’s life to God and embodying his values and purposes, and it provides a stability that is both effective in the present. See vv.4–6 again. Happiness is no superficial, carefree existence (vv.7–8).
The righteous are not immune from bad news and opposition. Rather, because they fear God, they need not fear evil. The reign of God and the consequent security of the righteous are asserted in the face of ongoing opposition. Not so with the wicked. While they will be hostile, they will waste away and come to nothing.
Practice/Word Application:
• And So: Their children will be mighty in the land (v.2).
Prayer Points:
• Help me Lord, to live in fear of you always.
• Pray for the political leaders of your country to imbibe the virtues of truth, honesty and compassion for their citizens.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Ezekiel 11:19
Read the Bible in one Year: 2 Kings 17–18; Matt. 15:1–20
