Scripture Union Daily Guide 27th May 2026 – Outline
It is amazing that David did not rush to become king over Israel now that Saul was dead, and God had already anointed him (1 Samuel 16:13). Before God, he had been king-in-waiting for years so he would not be presumptuous in moving fast to become king of Israel. Instead, notice the right step he took in 2 Samuel 2:1.
Thus, he was able to follow God’s directions and is anointed king by the people of Judah. It would take him another seven and half years before becoming king of all Israel. What would have happened had David failed to consult God? Lack of patience creates difficulties in our decision making. Many families are torn apart because men refuse to follow God’s word or consult their brothers and sisters or their wives.
It is not every decision that requires you to move with speed. God’s will should be the hallmark of Christian leadership. Unfortunately, in many African initiated churches, the founder is ‘sinless’. He takes no advice from anybody. Dictatorship is the order of the day. If you are a man, how do you run your home? Abner seems to have ruled the northern kingdom for five years before installing Ish-Bosheth who ruled two years compared to David’s seven.
