By asking Gideon and his household to be their ruler (Judges 8:22), the Israelites acknowledged his contribution in saving them from the hand of Midian. Note his response to their request. God alone is the ruler of the Israelites. Gideon recognized that he was only an instrument for God’s use. This is a commendable example of humility.
Humble yourself therefore before the Lord and he will lift you up. Gideon’s influence over the Israelites was so remarkable that the land enjoyed a period of peace for forty years during his lifetime (Judges 8:28).
Notice however, that even successful people have their shortcomings. What was Gideon’s point of weakness? See Judges 8:24-27.
The man, who started his ministry by destroying the images of Baal and burning the groves of the Asherah, made for Israel an ephod as an object which was sadly worshipped as an idol (Judges 8:27). How easy it is to conform to the patterns of the world! The Israelites quickly returned to idol and pagan worship after the death of Gideon.
