Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 6 November 2023
In the preceding chapters the focus has been on the punishment of cities or nations. The ultimate punishment following these is that of the entire earth. In vs.1-3, we note that the earth shall become desolate, and that God will not show any special favour according to people’s social standing, be they kings or servants. Notice that this period is the same with the one described in Luke 17:34-35 and Matthew 24:15-21.
In general, what is this period called? Why would the all-loving God subject nations and the earth to this kind of destruction (see vs.4-13)? Because of His love, God through this tribulation offers an opportunity for repentance. However, man’s heart would be hardened (v.5), that even amid this agony, he would remain stubborn (Revelation 9:15-21). Nonetheless, some people will hear the word of God and repent.
They will praise God for His judgments upon them which are just, and they will be joined with those who have overcome (vs.14-16; Revelation 7:9-14). There are people who love the world dearly and live as if they will not die (vs.17-18). As followers of Jesus Christ, our focus should be heaven, where we are already in Christ (Ephesians 2:6), not the possessions of this world.
Practice/Word Application
What next? Study Revelation 20:1-10. No one will escape the judgment of the Lord. All those who thrived by doing evil on earth, including the angels that have disobeyed God will not escape (vs.19-23).
