Jesus Christ could have caused bread and fish to rain down on the crowd like manna did for the children of Israel in the wilderness. Instead, He decided to involve the people present in working out the miracle. I try to picture how this miracle was performed. Let us use our God‐given imagination to fill in the blanks. An unnamed boy: In John’s Gospel, we read one interesting detail not mentioned here. The bread and fish which Jesus blessed and used came from the lunch box of an unnamed boy.

Women with baskets: The disciples must have borrowed baskets from some women! The disciples: Jesus blessed the food and put some bread and fish in the baskets the disciples were holding and sent them to distribute to the groups of 50. The group leaders formed queues and the disciples kept dishing out the food, but the food in their own baskets were not exhausted. Each person receives a piece of bread and fish. They kept eating, but whatever they got did not reduce in size until they were full! Read vs 17 again. What lesson can we learn from the 12 baskets of leftover?

So what? God is looking for people to work with Him to distribute spiritual food to hungry crowds today. Ask God to help you fulfil your part in this worthy mission.
