Scripture Union Daily Guide 9th May 2026 – Outline

God reassures Israel and Judah that, though they were being disciplined for their sins, He had not forsaken them (Jeremiah 51:5). To secure their deliverance, He would raise “the spirit of a destroyer” against Babylon who would decimate it (Jeremiah 51:1-4,11-14). We should be encouraged to know that, because of His faithfulness, God may punish us for our sins, He will not abandon us to the will of our enemies, and He would bring divine justice upon our oppressors at the right time.

Babylon once a world-power and an instrument of God’s judgement on other nations (Jeremiah 51:7,20-23) faced irreversible destruction (Jeremiah 51:8-9) for what it did against Zion and God’s Temple (Jeremiah 51:11,24; cf. Psalms 74:4-8). But God’s people would be vindicated (Jeremiah 51:10) and they will see God’s vengeance over their enemy (Jeremiah 51:24).

Note how worthless and undependable Babylon’s idols are in comparison to the God of Israel (Jeremiah 51:15-19). What does this teach us about whom and what we trust? Read Jeremiah 51:6 again. What are the Israelites expected to do in order not to partake in Babylon’s punishment, and how does this apply to us today (cf. 2 Corinthians 6:17-18; Revelation 18:4-5)?

And So
Trust in God’s faithfulness, walk in His ways and hope in His unfailing promises.
