IMMERSED IN GOD
Ted Witham (Western Australia, Australia)

TODAY’S READING
Psalm 139:1-10

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
God desires to know me completely.

Scripture: Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. – Psalm 139:23 (NRSV)

Deep under Duke University in North Carolina lies a world filled with fluorescent-lit rooms and millions of books. I once spent a few afternoons working in this underground library. I was drawn more and more deeply into my research: from this book, to this author, to this journal. It was a completely immersive experience.

As Christians, we seek a similar type of captivation in our relationship with God. While God is ultimately beyond our understanding, our Creator invites us in to learn about the Divine. We experience God through friendships, scripture, conversations, and all that comes with them.

Psalm 139 reminds us that this deep searching can be reciprocal. Not only do we have the opportunity to explore God, but God desires to search our hearts. God loves us and wants to be immersed in our hearts and minds. While the Almighty can do anything, God first wants our permission for this relationship. God desires an invitation.

When we invite God in and take part in this mutual searching, we are transformed. In experiencing God and opening ourselves to the Creator, we embrace our identity as the forgiven and become free to extend love, joy, and compassion.

TODAY’S PRAYER
God of wisdom, thank you for allowing us to experience you. Help us to open our hearts to your Spirit that we may be forever changed. Amen.
