The Upper Room Devotional for 17th March 2023

Your Father knows what you need before you ask him. – Matthew 6:8 (NIV)

I studied Greek in my college years to fulfill a language requirement. I chose a biblical language because it would help me in understanding scripture. I enjoyed the classes as well as the chance to practice Greek with my classmates.

Years later, after an unsuccessful marriage and with five young children to support, I was looking for a job where I could work from home. Working from home was not common at that time. My mother was a medical transcriptionist, and I was good at typing. So I set out to learn medical terminology in order to establish a career. As I began, I was delighted to see that I already knew a lot of the terminology because the Greek roots were familiar to me. What a joy! In a time of insecurity, it felt like an affirmation from God when I realized I had been preparing for this new role without knowing it.

Now, as I walk through life’s many twists and turns, I can trust God’s purposes more easily. I trust that challenging times are part of a bigger, perhaps divine plan. Looking for God’s surprises makes life’s journey richer.

TODAY’S PRAYER
O God, help us remember the ways you have worked in our lives, and give us vision and wisdom to see what you are doing now. Amen.

PRAYER FOCUS
Someone learning a new language
