The Upper Room Devotional 7th September 2024 Message
I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. – Matthew 25:35 (NIV)
My husband and I were traveling from Florida to the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio for an appointment to treat his congestive heart failure. Our evening flight to Cleveland had been canceled, and we spent the night in the airport before flying standby the next day. Weary and sleep-deprived, we arrived at our hotel at 10 a.m. but were unable to check in early. We wandered into the hotel restaurant to get breakfast, but it was closed until lunch. Exhausted and tearful, I explained our situation to the cook, and he offered to prepare something for us.
As we were eating, I realized the gift this man gave us. Our circumstances had gone downhill since our flight was canceled, and this cook showed us great kindness by volunteering to provide a meal for us during his break.
But to me it was so much more than breakfast. His act of kindness nourished my soul even more than my body. I truly saw Jesus working through this man. God works in small yet profound ways. We never know how we will be affected or how we will affect someone else. I hope I will always remember that cook’s generosity, especially when I become tired and weary with life’s inconveniences. And I pray his act of kindness inspires me to do the same.
Today’s Prayer
Gracious God, help us to remember those who have been kind to us and to find ways to be kind to others. Help us see your work in the actions of others. Amen.
