How is God calling me to help lighten someone’s burden today?
The Upper Room Devotional for 4th February 2023
Jesus said, “My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:30 (NRSV)
I phoned a friend whose husband suffers from multiple sclerosis. She herself does not enjoy the best of health. “How are you today?” I asked. “Well,” she replied, “it’s like I’m carrying a heavy suitcase around with me everywhere today.” We talked for a while, and at the end of our conversation she told me that she was feeling better. Being able to share her troubles with a friend had helped.
There are times when we all feel overburdened and would like to share that weight with someone. As Christians, we do indeed have someone: Jesus is only a prayer away! Jesus has assured us that we can bring our heavy burdens to him and find rest. As Christians, we can reach out to others with the love of Christ, sharing their burdens and lightening the load even as Christ does this for us. When we walk together with Christ, our burden is light.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, when we feel overburdened, help us to remember that you are only a prayer away. Remind us to share this knowledge with others. We pray as Jesus taught us, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (Matt. 6:9-13, NIV). Amen.
