Today’s Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 20 November 2022

Over the course of its history, Judah had some kings who were good and godly and others who were wicked and faithless. Jehoshaphat was one of the good leaders. Notice what he did when he learnt of the impending attack from the Edomites (vs.3‐4). Prayer and fasting are effective weapons that show our dependence on God.

Reflect on the content of Jehoshaphat’s prayer, thus: ? an affirmation of who God is (v.6). ? gratitude for fulfilment of God’s promises to Abraham and covenant with Solomon (vs.7‐9). ? the ingratitude of the Amonites for seeking to displace the Israelites, yet the Israelites did not invade them as they journeyed from Egypt (vs.10‐11). ? an appeal to God’s justice in judging the Amonites and saving the Israelites (v.12).

What can we learn from Jehoshaphat about the content of prayers we raise before God? Notice what God did in response to his prayers. God hears and answers prayers (vs.14‐17). Does it strike you that God gave details of how and where the Amonites’ army was camping (v.16) and assured Jehoshaphat and his team that they were only to serve as spectators at the battlefront (v.17)? Are you faced with frightening and challenging circumstances? What an appropriate response it is to respond to God in worship, reverence and praise!
