Scripture Union Daily Guide 11th January 2025 Outline
Consider the challenges this passage poses with regards to relationship with others and how we should deal with our needs.
In our interpersonal relationships, we will meet those who act in ways we may not approve of. We may disagree with others. Jesus, in this passage, is not saying we should not discern between good and evil or truth and error. He is rather warning against developing hypercritical spirit, becoming faultfinders. We should not find joy in seeking out other people’s shortcomings or judge intentions harshly but be generous and empathetic towards other’s failures. Even when they do wrong, Galatians 6:1 tells us how to handle them and gives us appropriate warning.
Dogs and pigs (Matthew 7:6) represent those who have contempt for godly things. The more they hear the gospel of salvation, the more they harden their hearts against it. See Titus 3:9. Ask, Seek, Knock (Matthew 7:7); properly translates ‘keep on asking, keep on seeking and keep on knocking’. Even though God knows our needs, asking shows a sign of our humble dependence on, and faith in Him as the only one who can help us. We should therefore ask with serious determination and persistence.
* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Pray for grace to be a faithful witness for the Lord his year. Pray that nothing will separate you from the love of Christ, but rather that God’s grace will be sufficient for you to stand firm to the end.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with: John 1:12
Whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them (Matthew 7:12).
Closing Prayer: Forgive me, dear Lord, when I have been too critical of my brother while focussing less on my faults.
