Read Daily Guide of the Scripture Union for Thursday 13th May 2021 Devotional Message

TOPIC: WHERE DO WE STAND? (SU Daily Guide 12th May 2021)

Opening Prayer: Oh Lord, grant me spiritual insight into the truth of your word as I study it.

Scripture: Matthew 28:11-20

Question(s) for Reflection:
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any command for me to obey?

TODAY’S MESSAGE: There are various characters and responses around the resurrection and ascension of Christ. Notice the main conversations in the passage. First, we have those who were all out to discredit the resurrection story. They would give anything to either cover up or distort the story (vs.11-15). Secondly, the disciples with their joys or struggles. These were followers – some believed and worshipped while others doubted.

They were probably dazed at this time – not sure if it was real or they were dreaming or hallucinating. Do we as followers of Christ sometimes doubt if He can draw us closer to God? It is when they overcame their doubt that they were able to take instructions from the Lord and obey Him. The third category are the disciples who received the command and the power. Jesus has the authority which He delegated to the disciples as He returns to the Father.

The disciples obeyed and set out to accomplish the task of the Great Commission (vs.18-20). Notice the assurance of the Lord’s presence. His presence means that they have all they needed to accomplish the task. The same is true for the Church today. As we obey Him and set out, we are assured of His constant presence with us.

Think of the fourth group of characters in this resurrection episode, the guards, who were opportune to be eyewitnesses to these wonderful event (v.11) but allowed themselves to be intimidated and beclouded by momentary financial gains.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer:
• Pray that as disciples of Christ, we will be more committed to the Great Commission.
• Pray against causes of climate change, war and other factors that could lead to famine and other disasters.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with
1 Kings 3-5; Matt. 6:19-34
