MESSAGE: Scripture Union Daily Guide 12th December 2020
When it comes to the issue of truth, Paul, the young Apostle, refuses to make any compromise not even when the culprit is veteran Peter. He would not give in to any act that would cast the slightest shadow on the truth of the gospel.
One would have thought that Peter had worked through this issue following his encounter with Cornelius and subsequent defence and testimony of his action (Acts 10, 11 & 15). What sin was Peter and other Jews accused of by Paul in v. 13? In what ways is this sin rearing its ugly head in the Church today? Are you guilty of this?
Peter’s ‘backsliding’ shows how strong peer pressure can be especially when such peers are VIC (Very Important Christians). Notice the impact of his action on others (v.13). Are you that concerned about the impression your lifestyle makes on others. Paul’s criticism was sincere and open.
He did not go about backbiting with the intention to divide the body of Christ. We must be ready to respond positively and humbly to such rebukes/corrections. Imagine if Paul were a Gentile, called to minister to the Gentiles. How easily would he have been able to address this sticky issue? God knows who can best do a particular aspect of his work.
Paul stresses that a man is put right with God by only one means (see vv.15–16). To him, what does becoming a Christian really mean (v.20)?
⁂ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
