TOPIC: THE LORD’S SONG IN A STRANGE LAND!

OPENING PRAYER: Help me to understand the exceeding greatness of your power as I read through this passage, dear Lord.

SCRIPTURE: Psalm 137:1-9
1By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. 2There on the poplars we hung our harps, 3for there our captors asked us for songs, our tormentors demanded songs of joy; they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!” 4How can we sing the songs of the Lord while in a foreign land? 5If I forget you, Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill. 6May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not consider Jerusalem my highest joy. 7Remember, Lord, what the Edomites did on the day Jerusalem fell. “Tear it down,” they cried, “tear it down to its foundations!” 8Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction, happy is the one who repays you according to what you have done to us. 9Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks.

Question(s) for Reflection:
• Is there any warning for me to heed?
• What is God revealing to me in this passage?

OUTLINE: SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE 12TH FEBRUARY 2021 DEVOTIONAL

The fox used to fear the cock because of the “fire” on its head (its crown). The cock, however, persuaded the fox to touch the crown assuring the fox it is harmless. The fox did, with fear and great worry, but from that day, it has preyed on the cock (an African legend). Throughout the Scriptures, we see how the prophets solemnly warn the Israelites of the consequences of forsaking God.

To choose to disobey God is to invite the “foxes to play with our crown”. The consequence is what we see in today’s passage – the enemy that should be serving Israel now taunts them to sing their worship songs. What a disaster! The singers remembered their city and their God and lamented. How often have we neglected the flashing danger warnings until we find ourselves in the devil’s grip?

Even then, there is still hope since we serve a faithful God who always remembers the covenant he has with His people. The way out, however, is not to rain ‘fire’ and ‘brimstones’ on our enemies (vs.7-8), but to restore fellowship with God (vs.4-6) by confessing our sins and turning from our wicked ways. The Lord is there, ready to deliver and restore us.

Practice/Word Application
• So: Is there any sin of which you need to repent? Do it right now.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer:
• Father, help me to live a holy life today so I do not have regrets tomorrow.
• Pray that God will sustain all Christian literature and Bible printers and publishers.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Hebrews 13:6 – 6. So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”

Bible In One Year: Isa. 53-55; Mark 13:1-20
