Finally, Jeremiah’s prophecy is fulfilled with Zedekiah taken into captivity. Zedekiah refused to heed God’s warning (Jeremiah 39:18), so he was captured as a rebel and taken away. What a terrible pain it was for the king as he watched his children being slaughtered in his presence. He was not exempted from the torture either (Jeremiah 39:7). All these were to ensure that they did not regroup and stage a rebellion. Compare this with some of the horrific things that go on in the war-torn areas of our world.
The Lord takes care of His own. Even during the war, torture and pain in the nation, Jeremiah obtained favour before Nebuchadnezzar (Jeremiah 39:13). He had suffered a great deal among his own people but now God has granted him favour before the enemy. God’s faithfulness and Jeremiah’s commitment to his call is evident here. God also rewarded Ebed-Melech, the Ethiopian who risked his own life to save Jeremiah when Jerusalem fell. Find out the reason in Jeremiah 39:18. Whatever we do to help God’s servants will be rewarded.
