Introduction to 1 Peter

Introduction: This letter was written by Peter who describes himself as “an apostle of Jesus Christ” and “a witness of Christ’s sufferings”. With the help of Silas in AD 64, he wrote the letter to Jewish Christians driven out of Jerusalem to Asia Minor and all believers everywhere. He calls his recipients and all believers “God’s elect, strangers in the world” and “a royal priesthood, a holy nation…”. The purpose of this letter was to encourage his readers to endure suffering and persecution. The readers were to note that just as Christ suffered and then entered into glory, so also believers will suffer for their faith before being exalted.

Questions for meditation
►Q1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
►Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 30 October 2026 Outline

Peter affirms that Christians are “born again” (1 Peter 1:3). What does this mean to you? To be born again is to experience rebirth or regeneration – an essential transformation that marks the beginning of the Christian life. This is best illustrated in the encounter between Nicodemus and Jesus in John 3:1-8.

What part does the resurrection of Jesus play in our rebirth (v3-5)? Our rebirth is made possible through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. And it gives us a “living hope”— not wishful thinking but a firm certainty grounded in Christ’s victory over death and the promise of an imperishable inheritance secured and guarded by God’s power (1 Peter 1:4-5).

Read 1 Peter 1:6-7 again. We will face trials that are meant to test and refine our faith. At such difficult times, we can hold onto our living hope and bring every concern before the Lord in prayer, knowing that He is with us.
Do you already have the assurance of being born again? Praise God for it. Are you uncertain if you are born again? Ask Jesus to give you the new life today (read Romans 10:9-10).
