Scripture Union Daily Guide 14th April 2021 – Nineveh’s Utter Destruction

Read Scripture Union Daily Guide for Today Wednesday 14 April 2021. May you be inspired by today’s reading.

TOPIC: NINEVEH’S UTTER DESTRUCTION ( See Scripture Union Daily Guide 13th April 2021)

OPENING PRAYER: Oh Lord, fill me with the power of the Holy Ghost as I study your word.

SCRIPTURE: Nahum 3:1-19

Question(s) for Reflection:
• Is there any command for me to obey?

SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE 14TH APRIL 2021 OUTLINE:

Make a list of the evils that have been practised by Nineveh as indicated in vs.1-4. Do you identify any of these evils in your community or nation? What warnings does the Lord give to Nineveh (vs.5-7)? The Bible shows God as acting strongly in judgment against wicked people and nations. Here, the Lord warns that by the time He is through with punishing Nineveh, there will be no one to mourn for or comfort her.

How should knowing the wrath God has in store for evil men and nations affect our relationship with those who do not know the Lord? See 2 Corinthians 5:11a. Does Paul’s response challenge you? We often don’t learn from the mistakes of others who have lived before us. How is this true of Nineveh (vs.8-11)? Observing the lives of other people may help us avoid their failure.

Notice the “images” the Lord used to show the futility of Nineveh’s efforts at self-preservation (vs.12-17). When God sends out His punishment on evil men or nations, nothing they do will be of help except repentance (cf. Isaiah 45:22).

The Ninevites chose to safeguard themselves by building fortresses, raising bigger troops, strengthening their gates and increasing their merchants rather than humbling themselves and turning to God as they did in response to Jonah’s message (Jonah 3). How does stubbornness and hardness of heart affect a person’s relationship with others and with God (Proverbs 29:1)?

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer:
• Lord, grant me a deep concern for the lost around me.
• Pray that the political leaders will act and conduct themselves in a manner that promotes peace and unity of their country.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalm 118:25-26
• Lev. 21-22; Rev. 1
