Scripture Union Daily Guide 20th June 2025 Outline

The book of Judges recounts a cyclical pattern in Israel’s history, characterized by a cycle of rebellion, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. Judges 10:1-18 is a prime example of this pattern, highlighting God’s faithfulness to His people even in the face of their repeated disobedience.
The Israelites had once again turned away from the Lord and followed foreign gods, provoking His anger. As a result, God allowed the Philistines and Ammonites to oppress the Israelites for eighteen (18) years. This serves as a sobering reminder that our choices have consequences, and when we turn away from God and pursue idols, we open the door to oppression and misery in our lives.

Despite their waywardness, the Israelites eventually reached a point of desperation. Take note of their action in Judges 10:10,15 and the practical steps they took to back this up (Judges 10:16a). This should speak to many today who claim to be Christians but continue in their old sinful life. Remember 2 Corinthians 5:17. We also have a glimpse to the heart of God (Judges 10:16b). He does not enjoy punishing us. In fact, He is ever ready to forgive and restore us whenever we return to Him in true repentance (Judges 10:16b).

And So:
When we find ourselves in distress due to our own disobedience, it is crucial to humble ourselves, turn back to God, and seek His forgiveness (1 John 1:9). Thank God for His mercies which never fail.
