What do you think of what David did (2 Samuel 10:1-2; see also 1 John 4:19-21)? David was not a leader who forgets those who supported him. Remember how he took in Mephibosheth (2 Samuel 9). What can we do today to return the great love and salvation we have enjoyed from Jesus, the King of kings? David’s good intention was misunderstood for a spy tactic and the new King Hanun was ill-advised 2 Samuel 10:3-4).
Most devastating decisions taken by our leaders often do not come directly from them, but from close associates. Our leaders desperately need godly counsellors to lead us well. Young leaders must be careful to weigh the implications of counsels before acting on them. Notice that David was not indifferent about the ill-treatment of his servants (2 Samuel 10:5).
As Jesus’ disciples, we often suffer humiliation for our faith and simple obedience to our Master but let us always remember that our Lord is not unconcerned (Hebrews 2:14-18; Hebrews 4:14-16). The wicked runs when no one pursues (2 Samuel 10:6-8). Joab employed military strategies and urged courage, but also recognized that the outcome of the battle ultimately depended on the Lord (2 Samuel 10:9-12).

Let us always seek to know the mind of God amidst counsels to prevent needless disaster in our land.

Lord, surround our leaders with godly counsellors so they can lead well.
