Scripture Union Daily Guide 23rd August 2026 Outline
Moses reminds Israel of the commandment and warning in Deuteronomy 6:1-3. Israel’s destiny rests on their obedience to this one great commandment. If they obey it, their lives will be long and full of blessings.
No matter how much they want to do the right thing, unless they have a real love for God, they will not be able to obey His law. The Hebrew confession of faith, Shema, in Deuteronomy 6:4,5 depicts this. The inner strength to walk in His ways comes from love for God. How do you evaluate your love for God?
Notice the repeated instructions about the importance of communicating the commandment to the next generation. Not only do they have to keep God’s commandments in their own hearts, they also must teach their children to do the same. Always talk about it. Always have it prominently displayed – hand, forehead, doorposts and gates of the house. The family life is to be guided by knowing and understanding God’s law.
Observe the warning God gave His people especially during the period of prosperity (Deuteronomy 6:10-12). He also warns against doubting His love and concern for them (v.16). How prosperity has turned many away from dependence on, and fear of God. We think we can do without Him.
